I like the National Audubon Field Guides to Eastern Birds, I have atleast 9 Field Guides for things ranging from seashore, reptile, insects even weather east soast and west coast included.

Its a house finch, purple finch seems to have more red on its tail feathers then the house finch, havent noticed any red on the tail feathers of the birds I have around the feeder. Thanks

I always called them Headwound Finches. They look like they've suffered a head wound.
