The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) have located the owner of the kayak that was found floating unattended in the Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of the West River at 7:20 this morning.

A neighbor of the owner, alerted searching Officers of the possible owner of the kayak.. Officers interviewed the kayak owner, Christopher Drott, 52 from Edgewater, Md who stated that he fell out of the boat at 7:00 pm last night and was able to swim safely to shore. Drott thought the kayak sank to the bottom and did not alert authorities of the accident.

The search started when a waterman found the unattended floating kayak. As in all cases of unattended floating vessels, authorities assumed that the operator fell overboard and started a search. Search crews from NRP, MSP, Coast Guard, and Anne Arundel participated in the search.

Boat owners and operators are reminded to immediately notify NRP of all missing watercraft at the Maryland Natural Resources Police Communication Center at 800-628-9944.

Glad he was found safe. Disappointed that it wasn't reported. Anyone using any type watercraft should know what is expected of them in any given situation. So that valuable man power and time aren't wasted.

It had the life jacket in it? I would hope it was a spare. Lucky, if not.

We found an unoccupied Grady White with VA registration drifting near Coltons Point yesterday. Towed it to the government pier and tied it up. Contacted USCG, Baltimore sector on VHF 16 and reported it. About an hour later, someone was towing back to VA.

Bright orange stickers on which paddle craft owners write name and address and telephone number are available from Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas, Vessel Safety Inspectors of CGAUX and Power Squadrons as well as retailers like West Marine. Every paddle craft owner is strongly advised to get the sticker. These are FREE.
