Twenty-seven people on a 34 ft yacht

Doesn't say, but common sense would dictate a lower number, maybe ten at the most.

27 people sounds like a lot for a boat that size.

But you know what? Not only the boat owner but all the passengers felt the need to take their chances. So hopefully they had a good time before they dumped over.

I'm surprised (or not) that the kids were the ones that died. #1, they should have been wearing life jackets; and #2, typically their adult(s) will see to them first.

Article says maybe 10. It must have been really crowded and top heavy.

Especially if they mostly went over to one side.

Not to downplay the event, but we used to 'play' like that in my sailboat that was pretty darn hard to capsize. I'd poke my buddy, give him a wink, and then say, "OH LOOK OVER THERE!" and lean to one side of the boat. Of course everyone else did too and got the mast to strike the water once... Never lost anyone overboard tho.

My Uncle & Grandmother live across the street from one of the victims. They've been getting bombarded all day by reporters to give a statement. Apparently the 3 children were in the cabin when the boat suddenly started to sink. Life vests or not, they were trapped. But why the hell they felt the need to cram all those people on a boat that size, I'll never understand. My uncle thinks all the kids are related, my heart breaks for their family.
