I have the life jacket right next to me at all times, BUT NOT wearing it unless I'm doing something risky. Even Kayaking, I have it right behind me, but don't wear it. I am a very good swimmer and in shape.

Yes, I know the argument, you can be knocked unconscience and drown, and I don't deny that is possible. But, personally, (and I have a lot of experience getting hit in the head) the risk of that are remote (for me) and I believe for my own personal choice I will risk that remote possibility and NOT be uncomfortable and hot in the jacket.

For others, I would never question their choice to follow the rules and always wear it. And if you're NOT a good swimmer, nor do you know your tolerance for blows to the head, or do have a history of even momentary loss of conscience from a blow, then I would suggest it be wise you wear it all times, NOT only risky things like water skiing, jet skiing or tubing.

Those risky things, even a power boat that moves fast, yea, chances go up immensley that you can get knocked out, definitely wear a life vest.

To hot/constricting/uncomfortable and I can swim. I fell asleep during my Navy bootcamp float test

If I was in dangerous weather or rough water I'd keep one nearby

I'll wear my inflatable all the time I'd I remember to bring it, but the foam on a 90 degree day with 90% humidity? Not happening.

You may float, but will it be face up or face down. I joined this site to discuss boating safety issues only! I moved from Bowie to Garrett County MD 3 yrs ago! I am involved with boating safety here on Maryland's larges lake in Western MD. Abt 63 miles around lake shore! Many boats & PWC ( jet skis).
I keep records of accidents on lake. This yr, there were at least 2 that were found "face down" after being thrown from a jet ski! I do know the jet ski rentals only use a type 2 life jacket. A type 1 would have likely kept they head up as designed! So, save the Emergency rescue crews a run & wear one! If you don't, ldon't forget to leave a list of your next-of-kin!

It rubs my sun burn/can't tan with it on

It makes me look fat(er)

If we have an emergency, chances are I need to move FAST and not get stuck or snagged in making sure the kids and old people have something that floats/get clear. As long as I don't get knocked out or hurt too bad to tread water, there WILL be something for me to grab a hold of when I am done being heroic.
