Maryland State Delegate, Don Dwyer caused the accident and was drunk, twice the legal limit.

"I deeply regret my actions and ask for your forgiveness," Dwyer said, adding that no one should operate a car or boat while under the influence of alcohol. He said his thoughts are with the others injured in the collision.

Whatever... you are just regretting you got caught.

Of course, he is regretting he got caught. Arrogance, alcohol, and boating don't mix. When will politicians ever get it? At the very least, they should hold a higher standard for themselves because voters elected them to lead. and :shakeshead:

THREE times the legal limit.

0.08 is legal limit, His was 0.2 something.
To be upright and driving a boat he must have some kind of tolerance.
I about gagged when he asked for forgiveness.
He otta be treated like any one with a DWI: Lock him up!

Forgiveness would be OK but let him stand trial and pay the consequences just like any other citizen... No special behind closed doors deal either...

We can hope that the next thing he does in his office is to load up his personal items into a box and walk out for the last time.
We dont need people like this in public office.

Dear supporters and friends,

I would like to take a moment to update you. In the past year I have faced both personal and professional challenges that were extremely difficult for me. As a result, and regrettably so, I turned to alcohol to cope. As many of you know, this culminated in a serious boat accident in August when the boat I was operating was struck by another vessel. Though I am unable to discuss the accident itself due to the pending court case, I thought it important that I share with you the steps I have personally taken to address my problem with alcohol.

First, it’s important for you to know that prior to last year; I enjoyed beer or wine socially.

Second, I would like to tell you that in order to prevent a prolonged problem with drinking as a coping mechanism; I voluntarily entered and completed an alcohol intervention program. Additionally, I am committed to attending extensive aftercare counseling, as well as AA meetings.

It is extremely difficult to lay bare a deeply personal issue in such a public way. However, I believe it is the right thing to do, as I feel answerable to the folks who chose me to represent them in the Legislature. I know you have been shocked and disappointed as a result of how I conducted myself. I don’t know if I am to be forgiven, but I certainly hope to regain your confidence.

This Session I am committed to renewing my focus to defending personal liberty, property rights and second amendment rights. Please feel free to contact my office by phone at 410-841-3047 or by email at don.dwyer@house.state.md.us should you like to speak with me personally. I would be willing to discuss my recovery or any legislative issues.

Judging from the wording:

I'm guessing he is fighting charges on that?

If you lock him up then you AREN'T treating him like everyone else convicted of DUI..

DUI, normally, results in paying for a lawyer, going to court, paying a fine, and taking whatever nonsensical classes the judge tells you to take..

NORMALLY it doesn't result in loss of employment or long term incarceration.

SOOOOO, why do you feel he should be treated any different than any Joe on the street, when in fact he represents the same?

Was he wrong? Yes he was..

Will he be a felon after the fact? No he won't.

Should he lose his job? No, I don't believe he should, UNLESS that is part and parcel of the punishment for everyone else convicted of like crimes.

I have so many issues with baltimoresun.com - pop ups, freezing, not sure if it is on my end or theirs. Anyway, I wonder if others do too which is the reason for the lack of response to the question they ask or if the article was so buried it just hasn't been all that noticed over there.

The question the article asks is...

What do you think? Should Delegate Dwyer resign?

You answered it and said

No, I don't believe he should, UNLESS that is part and parcel of the punishment for everyone else convicted of like crimes.

And I feel that this is a bit different in the fact that he is elected. I'm actually surprised an incident, such as this, wouldn't be a reason to fire him considering his position. I'm torn on his letter, part of it is excuses and part of it is taking responsibility. I think I might have felt better about it if he said "look, I was out on the water, drinking, one thing lead to another and I had too much." But here he is admitting that he handled problems by reaching for the bottle, meaning there were other times he was that drunk and didn't get caught. He is admitting he has a drinking problem - not just the guy who had too much to drink.

Make sense??
