PWC Question

In Maryland, you have to be 16 operate....

In the state of Virginia, you can operate at age 14 & 15 with proof you've taken a boaters safety class.

So... if a 14 year old is licensed in Virginia and riding in Maryland, is that allowed since Virginia allows it or do you have to follow the rules by each state?

Last summer I took the online boaters course so you'd think I would remember. Nope, haven't a clue.

Maryland owns the Potomac to the high tide line in VA. VA & MD have a mutual agreement whereas VA recognizes MD law on fishing & hunting laws.

Having said that, I cannot answer your question....

Are you talking about operating in VA? Or operating in MD?

Both... I am going to have my son take his boater's safety class in Virginia since we have an address there and he can legally ride in Virginia there... but my question comes down to this... will the laws pertaining to his license in Virginia cover him if he gets pulled over in Maryland? I may just have to check with DNR.

Virginia now requires anyone under the age of 50 to have on them proof they have completed the online boaters safety class in order to operate a PWC.

Your PWC has a VA registration. Wouldn't the licensing of your son while he operates a VA registered vessel be covered under the 'full faith and credit' provisions ?

I'd take a "when in Rome" stance on this.

Confession: I got pulled over by DNR soon after making this post. I was flying up Goose Bay on my jet ski. Flying to me is about 35-40 MPH. My husband, going faster of course, managed to dodge getting stopped but he did make his way back. We handed him our registrations from Virginia (no stickers hence the reason for the stop). He was really nice about it. We all chatted for a bit since we were the only ones out on the water. He said if my son was stopped in Virginia, they will just ask for his boater's safety certificate - which complies with the requirements there. That they typically don't do searches on vessels registered out of state. He just has to be the proper age and after recognizing my husband he knew which boy we were talking about. He said he thought with his size, he was already 16. He admitted that he wouldn't have even bothered to stop us if it wasn't for the obvious missing stickers. Typically they don't bother stopping jet skies unless you are acting like an idiot on it.
