From what I understand the director wanted to mention a woman that Dumbledore had been interested in at some point in his life and, to J.K. Rowling, this was unacceptable as she knew the character was gay. She's done everything she can to make sure the characters stay true to the story she put forth and I think this was no exception.

It would be like George Lucas saying all of a sudden that Chewbacca, was in fact, gay.

I actually hate that she did this. Who cares if the character is gay? It doesn't take away from the whimsical-ity (if that is a word) of the whole series. Kids still love it just the same and they are none the wiser. Kids are using their imaginations and now I can see some parents taking the series away, thus taking the imaginations of the children away. I don't think Harry Potter needed any more publicity. It's already popular enough! How much more money do these people need to make? Come on...
