Biting Kitty

I'm newly owned by a cat (first one) and I've been having problems with him biting me when I'm petting him. Anyone have any ideas for how to stop this?

Welcome to being owned by a cat. Nice way to put it...very accurate!

My first kitten nipped at my feet a lot when she was being playful. I used the squirt bottle. It stopped after some time. Not sure if it was the bottle, but I had darn good aim.

But she never bit while petting her. Hmmm. Not sure that squirting her eye out when you are an inch away is adviseable.

It may be possible that he either doesn't like where you are petting him (i.e. the belly) or maybe he has a little injury there that makes him nip at ya.

There are SO many things it could be- boredom, playful kitten behavior that needs to be trained, etc etc.

All this yap and I have no useful advice. Just give it some time...try a few things. In the meantime, wear oven mits.

I had the same problem with Gemma. I did a bit of reading and some folks suggested that you time how long you can pet your cat before they attack. Once you figure out how long you can pet your cat without it attacking you, pet them for less than that time. If it takes 20 seconds for her to attack, only pet her 15 seconds.

It worked for me ....

Kitty's just playing. When Moose would start that, I'd stop petting him and tell him "No biting". Then I'd pet him some more and the process would repeat until he got the message.

So mean!!!

And yeah ... I didn't really upgrade with the move from CC. I'm in PG County now right on the border of Howard and Montgomery County. It's a little better ... but yeah....
