When I came home this afternoon another bird was in the kitchen and from the looks of my floors (feathers all over the place) and the bird he didn't die right away. The cat must have been having fun. I don't want to take away his time outside. The dog and cat actually seem to have a good time playing outside or napping in the sun

Keep your kitty inside.

If you don't want to keep him inside, block his access to the kitty door so he has to knock to get in. Then you can check to make sure he doesn't bring any presents with him.

A better option is to build him a screened-in porch with a skylight.
