So, it's subjective, an individual thing but, we are talking about the same thing; ending the life of something you love and will miss and, as hard as it is, it's the right thing to do.
I get the distinction.... and trust me, the last horse we actually had the vet come out and put down did not give her enough and it was a struggle I never want to witness again. Pets I have taken to the vet have always gone quietly. Also, in this case the cat is eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and has had the growth for some time. So not so much and immediate animal is suffering greatly situation. It is a very individual thing and hard to be the one that makes that decision no matter how you look at it. Easier for most if it is at someone elses hand I would think.

Fortunately, in todays age, we do have the means to put down a four legged member of the family in a gentler, more humane way then was offered 20 or 30 years ago. Animals today are thought of differently than when I was a child. My beloved dog Nikki, was 18 when I had her put down. I hoped more than anything that she would pass quietly at home on her bed with my husband and I with her. She didnt do that, but she told me, in so many actions and looks that she was ready to go. It broke my heart to take her to the vet and have her put to sleep, but she and I knew she was ready. There is no way I could've taken her out in the yard and put a bullet thru her head. At least this way, I could hold her and her last sight was me holding her. I still miss her very much, and I still cry thinking about her or seeing pictures of her. I mean, she was with me for 18 years, about the same time you raise a child before they leave home. I have comfort knowing that I did the most humane thing for her at the time. As pet owners, we all have to deal with this when the time comes. The only thing I can say is, do what feels right in your heart, rather its the vet or a bullet. I sympathize with anyone who has to make this decision and live with it. When the comes you'll know what to do and how to do it. Trust your heart.

That'd make me want to put a bullet through my head.
