HP traditionally makes the best laptops. Usually anything from HP should be good. Toshiba also usually makes pretty decent laptops.
Word of advice, stay away from Dell.

If you search thru the forum here, you'll find a few people that have had hardware issues with HP. Turnaround time for repair isn't great. If I were to get a Windows laptop now, it would be a Leveno. However, I've had it with with the Windows environment, issues, failures, intrusions, and my next laptop will be a Mac.

I've had several Dell's, PC's and laptops, never any problems that I did'nt cause myself, Bought two for the teens for xmas @ $499.00 ea. Bare bones but they do everything they need them to do.

I have a lap for you to top

A good one will be one you can afford, but check out some of the coupon sites for great deals.

I have gone through a handful of laptops over the years and the best of the bunch have been Toshibas. Acer is awful, Averatec decent but doesn't seem to hold up to traveling and daily use, Compaq somewhat better overall but Toshiba is what I'll stick with.

Will be experimenting with a Lenovo 'netbook' this week. 10" screen should travel better and get pretty much everything done but I'll hang on to my current Toshiba just in case.

I have a Toshiba Satelite I bought back in 2003 that I still use it is flawless, Lenovo's are good too from what I hear, this is the former IBM correct?
