No way I'd "upgrade" to Vista

I was in Walmart looking for a replacement computer for my Mom last week and all the Vista machines had stickers saying they they were eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade. Maybe this is something Microsoft is doing to remove the stigma of Vista

The actually had a few e-machines with XP on them. Heading down later this week to get her one.
Windows 7 is out. If she has to "deal" with Vista briefly before getting the free 7 upgrade, it's worthwhile. Vista isn't nearly as bad as what people make it out to be, since they fixed most of the problems. Having Vista with a free 7 upgrade is far better than keeping her on XP.

She uses it to play games, mostly solitare.
Windows 7 has a release date of 10/22 for the public
No internet connection so upgrading it would present problems.

Turn on the Windows auto update , let Windows go get its own updates from Microsoft and down load them , that way you will always be up to date with upgrades and patches. You will have the option to install or not. But at least you will know its legit. MS would never email anyone to tell them to update. You can get still new machines from Dell with XP with option to upgrade to Windows 7 for free , I just ordered a truck load of them with XP.

A co-worker offered me one, but she's due for a new machine. That 98 box took about 10 minutes to boot up

but that reminds me, I need to download "Elf Bowling" before I leave.
