How bad is this?

Got an e-mail today offering a free windows update

We invite you to update your computer.

To install the latest version of the browser, go to the site by clicking on the link below:

http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...erno=25451511/

Once the update download, follow these steps:

1. Look WindowsUpdate file, usually it is on the desktop after the download.
2. Double Click WindowsUpdate
3. Wait 2 minutes for the update is done and it's good

Any idea as to what might happen with this?

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

tactic used for installing malware to hijack your computer, especially if you can't verify that it actualy comes form Microsoft Safest bet is don't do it!!!

i don't know if you copied/pasted the link or what, but it definitely links you to microsoft.com from here. I checked the microsoft website and got to that link (minus the computer # part at the end) to see it discussing upgrade. Any chance you registered yourself on some sort of Windows list?

Even if the link looks legit, the instructions would be enough to make me hit Delete!!

I'd check via the actual website and not click the link (or right click and copy where the link sends you to see if it's the same). That's the way to avoid bad crap like that. I've heard Windows 7 is much better than Vista. If I could get an upgrade, I'd probably take it.

I'm running XP
No way I'd "upgrade" to Vista

I was in Walmart looking for a replacement computer for my Mom last week and all the Vista machines had stickers saying they they were eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade. Maybe this is something Microsoft is doing to remove the stigma of Vista

The actually had a few e-machines with XP on them. Heading down later this week to get her one.
