Stuck in Power Save Mode !

Hi all,
I turned on my Dell PC, it came on just fine. But the moniter says it is going into power save mode. After turning off pc and monitor, I am still getting the enter power save mode ! I know last night when I turned it off, it said it was doing an update before shutting off. I wonder if that affected it.

Any ideas how to fix ?

This could be several things. It could be the monitor cable has gone bad and the monitor is no longer getting a signal from the PC. It could be that somehow your resolution got changed to a setting that is out of range for your monitor and it doesn't recognize the signal. It could be the monitor itself has gone bad. It could be the VGA/HDMI connection on the motherboard has gone bad. It could be the monitors driver was automatically updated to one that does not work. Does it work as the BIOS boots up and just loses the signal when it goes into windows?

If so then I would recommend booting into safe mode and seeing if you get anything that way. Just keep pressing F8 as the computer is booting. It will bring you to a menu and choose safe mode with networking. If it boots fine into safe mode then you know it is a driver issue. Just go into device manager and roll back the video driver and maybe monitor driver. Then boot back into Windows normally.

Laptop or Desktop?

If it's a laptop you might want to make sure your power supply is still good or that your battery isn't losing its charge/need a new battery.

I can't think of a reason a desktop would be doing this unless you accidentally changed your power settings toa really short period. You can access this by right-clicking on your desktop, click properties. Click on the Screen Saver Tab. Then under Monitor Power click Power. In the next window you can set the time for each parameter. I have my standby and hibernate settings to "never".

Another thing to check in both cases (laptop or desktop) is your motherboard should have a nickel-size battery on it. This could also be dead. You have to crack open your computer to get to it.

Or you may have some sort of malware causing this. Perhaps you should scan it.

If you have your computer and monitor plugged into a power strip/surge protector or one of those UPS battery back-up's, power down your computer at the "O-F-F switch," then hit the one on the UPS or power strip to power EVERYTHING down.

I will occasionally (sp?) have that problem with my computer if I turn it off at the switch on the tower. So, I turn off the power strip, count to 10 or 15 then power everything back up. .....seems to work.

Try This

My Gateway does this occassionally. Try unplugging both monitor and CPU for 30 Minutes and plug it back in. SHould be good to go.
If Not, connect a different monitor to it and boot it. Then swap them out.
These are the two ways I have corrected mine.

Get Rid of the Dell Promblem Solved!

1.Check Your Video Connection at the monitor and the Computer

2.Boot into safe mode by tapping F8 when you see the blue dell logo at boot up then go right click "my computer" then click properties then click device manager when device manager opens look for video devices or display adapters click the little arrow to the left of it to open the tree then right click the entry under video devices and click properties then up top youll see a tab that says drivers click that then click roll back driver once its done reboot.

This is instructions for vista/7 xp is alittle different

3. If that doesnt work video is bad go purchase a video card from any computer supply store and install it

4. If that doesnt work bad motherboard

5.if you feel you are not experienced enough to do this PM me for business details and I can help you out.

If it's a Dell Laptop, 9 out of 10 times it's a broken power plug on the laptop..

If you look where the power supply plugs into the laptop there's a little plasitc cylinder it plugs into.

First sign of trouble (the plastic cylinder is cracked) is you no longer will charge your battery. You will still have power (for now) but it won't charge your battery and you will be operating in a power save mode.

Next step, the plug breaks the rest of the way and you have NO power.

Not an easy fix, but doable by someone comfortable with taking a laptop apart. You can buy the new Plug and Play part (includes the USB ports on mine) for about $75-100. There is a computer repair place online that will do it for you for an additional $110.

If you buy JUST the power port, there will be soldering involved.

Of course this assumes a laptop and not a PC..
