IP Camera as a webcam

When we found out we were having a baby one of the things I decided I wanted was and IP Camera based video monitor. Picked up one of these TRENDnet TV-SecurView Internet Surveillance and also a Sony Dash Personal during a Woot off over the summer. The goal was to make the camera stream video to the Dash and keep it as Pandora alarm clock.

A few hours of tinkering with it tonight I was able to find the right single image url to make it stream correctly. I'm now able to watch the camera on my Blackberry, iPad, Android phone, and computer. Last thing to get it working on is a TouchPad. I'll tackle that another day but since it is so open it shouldn't be an issue.

Android and Blackberry were able to stream it over RTSP but iOS doesn't support RTSP so I had to use an app. The app gives me more control but I would have liked it to work over the protocol. Chalk another one up for Android.

Did I need to do this, nah but it sure was cool to get it working.

Now that baby number two is on the way I bought another camera to use as a babycam. This one was $100 cheaper but seems better so far. When I was researching last year I came across the Foscam cameras but dismissed them because the reviews. Main issue was warranty but that has been fixed. Just have to buy it from the right places.

The IR on it is really good. This is in a room without lights at midnight. Tomorrow night Ill put the camera's next to each other in the same room.

I have a foscam my buddy bought me because I/we have baby #1 on the way and its alright. They make a HD version which is MUCH clearer!

My first camera in the original post is "HD" but it is all a gimmick. Main thing with these is frame rate and while wireless is good enough for a baby cam I would have to hard wire them for security. Picture quality of both greatly improves on the wire.

I recently got a Vivotek 8332 IP camera

what I cannot do, is get it punched out of my firewall ... so i can view it from work

Did you set up a DNS server?

I have a No IP account setup, I can get to other things on my home network, port forwarding is setup

the same port works with the internal IP

cameraip:2048

externalIP:2048 ----> all traffic going to port 2048 forward TCP / UDP to internal IP:2048

Port forwarding is not set up then. DDNS is only needed if you don't want to use the IP.

Just saw your post (I have you hidden). Are you sure your work is not blocking it?

Will the camera allow you to use a PPPOE connection? If so, this bypasses the router completely and you get an IP address from your ISP, not the router.

This is what I do for my security system. It's plugged in to the router on a standard port, and get a DHCP IP address from the router, but it also connects with a PPPOE connection, so it actually has 2 IP addreses. The local 192.168.1.x from the router, and a 70.17.x.x from Verizon. I can connect to the 70.17.x.x address from anywhere.

Top is the Foscam, bottom is the Trendnet. Foscam is my new one and the Trendnet I bought last year.

The Foscam has IR that glows red and could cause permanent damage to the baby's brain I think

Second picture has the IR turned off. This is where the Trendnet shines. Its IR is less but also no glow.
