But the impacted companies have said that production will likely be disrupted though at least March 2012, according to IHS iSuppli, leading to a potential PC shortage -- particularly with laptops -- in the first quarter.

Thailand serves as an electronics manufacturing hub for hundreds of companies. As the company suffers its worst flooding in decades, Thai production of consumer electronics supplies, particularly hard drives, has come to a standstill.

This has been a point of discussion in conference calls with many computer / device makers. The upshot being that the big players (e.g. HP, Apple) with strong contracts with hard drive suppliers should be fine while the smaller players, and those that buy component hard drives in a secondary market (i.e. not directly from the suppliers and under contract), are facing some pain for the next quarter or two in the form of supply shortages and higher prices on the supply that they can get.

Microsoft Says PCs May Have Missed Fourth-Quarter Estimates - Bloomberg

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said industrywide sales of personal computers will probably be lower than analysts had projected in the fourth quarter because supply was hurt by flooding in Thailand.

Analysts have estimated that total PC shipments fell about 1 percent in the quarter, Tami Reller, chief financial officer of Microsoft’s Windows unit, said an investment conference. The actual number is probably lower, she said. Bill Koefoed, Microsoft’s general manager of investor relations, echoed those remarks at a separate event.

“As the numbers come out, you’ll likely see that number decline further as the impact has been felt faster than people had anticipated,” Koefoed said at a JPMorgan Chase & Co. conference. Reller told the audience at a Nomura Holdings Inc. event that there could potentially be more downward adjustments. Both conferences were held in Las Vegas, where the Consumer Electronics Show is under way.

Was looking at ordering a laptop from Dell and was told the 7400RPM HDs are delayed to March. 5400RPM HDs would ship next week.
