HDMI switch problem

Let me see if I can adequately describe this so that maybe someone smarter with technology can maybe help me out.

My TV has two HDMI connections, I have the DVD/surround sound system going to HDMI 1 and the DirectTV receiver going to HDMI 2. The tv is set up to run all the sound through the DVD/surround sound system, so I don't use the tv volume. Now enter the Xbox. I bought an HDMI switch so that I could hook the Xbox up and switch between TV and the Xbox. The problem is when this is set up, I get no sound. I get nothing out of the surround sound system or the TV. Video seems fine. There didn't seem to be anything complex about the set up, it's just a switch, and there's got to be a way to do it, but I'm lost.

How many HDMI inputs does your surround sound system have?

I route all my HDMI cables into the surround sound amp (DVD, media player, etc..), then one HDMI from the amp to the TV. This way it always works the same regardless of input, just have to tell the amp which input to take from.

I'll have to look, but I think just one. The system is 5 years old, so I'm sure it's limited.

I'd do it this way. All the HDMIs into the switch, then into the amp, then to the TV.

Once in a while HDMI auto detect doesn't work, especially on older hardware, so you might have to make all the switch changes, then turn off and turn on all the hardware in sequence. It's also possible your X-box isn't compatible with your amp. Try putting the X-box directly into the amp with no other switches or devices.

The switch probably video-only passthru.

Get a nice receiver from Best Buy that has HDMI switching. It sounds to me like you have one of those home theater in-a-box systems.

Well, I think I'm just screwed. I looked up the switch I have and am having a hard time finding a positive review. A lot of people have the same problem that I have. It's supposed to pass audio, but doesn't. I didn't do any research on it because it's a switch, there's really not much to switch, but lesson learned. Don't buy this product. TERK HDMI-21 SMART switch.

Sounds like it might be time to invest in a nice HDMI switching amp.

I got a fairly inexpensive Sony, but I'm real happy with it. Makes hookups so much easier.

Video / Audio hookups, for you people thinking outside the box....
