you should be able to use a 'Bluetooth' mouse

make sure it conforms to the STANDARD Bluetooth specs ...

... some manufactures use 'Bluetooth' radio but at a higher frequency and you need their dongle to connect the thing ....... any BT Mouse without a dongle should work fine.

RE the mini - the only thing I can say is, new hardware A6 vs A5 might draw more power, as well as the higher res screen ... for the iPad 1 / iPad Mini ... half the battery size as well ...

I ordered mine direct from the company and got it at a 50% discount for $44.00. I would love to be able to hook up a portable mouse if at all possible. Also did you put a skin on your Ipad before putting it in the Zagg case? I am thinking of getting a clear skin to protect the back from getting scratched from taking it in and out of the Zagg as I have a small flip case for when just using the Ipad for fun.

I ended up having to take the first Ipad mini back yesterday as it was using more than 15% of battery life in 45 minutes of only internet surfing and over an hour to recharge back to 100%. My Ipad 1 actually held a better charge and recharged more quickly in comparison. It worked out for the best though as I had really wanted a black one but settled for white as the black was out of stock. Luckily a new shipment arrived yesterday when I went to exchange the white one so it all worked out well.

I settled for an HP Pavilion laptop for home and major school use and so far I am liking it. I went to the other side of the spectrum and got the 17.3" screen and moved my desk top to a spare desk for the kids to use for school projects if needed.
You're asking if you can hook up a mouse to an iPad? It's a touch screen. A mouse seems to defeat the purpose.

HP Pavilion sounds like a good choice, they have a good rep. Use that for your office & power stuff and then take something small to classes just for notes. Are you going to get an app where you can actually write your notes, or are you going to hook up a keyboard for that stuff?

Also, I know you've moved on from Chromebook, but my impression of that laptop is that it's primarily an "internet" laptop with little utility elsewhere. I don't see much of a point to it other than people who really want a laptop but only use it to go online. If it was a typical laptop I'd have considered it otherwise, since the price is great.

Yes, I like the HP so far. I got a great deal on it at Staples for 449.99 with a 50.00 mail in rebate. It has 6gb of memory and 750gb on the hard drive. It has a 17.3" screen so it is definitely not something I will be lugging to a class. I will be splitting between online and lecture classes so the HP will be great for home and the Ipad mini will be for class notes, killing time between classes and just fun. I have attached the link to the keyboard case I got for the mini.

Accessories For iPad mini | Protection for Your iPad mini | ZAGG

I do plan on purchasing the aps needed to take notes, create documents, spreadsheets and presentations. I was told these aps are about 10.00 a piece which is cheap in comparison to buying Office Suite. As you can see from the link once the Ipad is in the case it looks like a mini laptop hence the reason I would like to have the option of using a travel size mouse if possible.

I have a small fold over case that holds the mini right now that I got for 5.00 that I am/will use for non school related tasks. I had purchased a more expensive one from Best Buy but took it back after I found the 5.00 case and decided to order the Zagg keyboard case. I could not beat the price on the Zagg as their selling right now from the manufacturer for 50% off. They are 89.99 at Walmart and Best Buy.

If you have Quickoffice and like using it, you probably don't need them.

I have them in part because they make working on or accessing documents from multiple devices and computers so effortless. I no longer have to give thought to moving files (for text documents, spreadsheets, or presentations) around between my devices - no figuring out how best to do it, no file saving, no physical transfer, no Dropbox, no email. And no worrying about which version of a document I have on which device. If I create a document on one device or on my Mac, it's on all the others as soon as I pick them up. If I change a word or number in a document, it's changed on all of my devices. Wherever I'm at and whatever device happens to be convenient to use at the time, all of my iWork documents are available - with the latest changes I've made - and with essentially no effort on my part. That represents significant value added to me.

The current Mini uses the A5 processor, but the A6 probably wouldn't create a power drain problem anyway. That's the great thing about the A6 - it's not only very fast, it's also very efficient compared with what else is out there. That's one of the reasons they were able to keep a small battery in the iPhone 5 and still deliver good battery life. Apple outdid itself with that silicon.

The Mini is also the lower resolution (i.e. the same as the original and 2nd generation iPads). So even though its battery is something like 40% of the size of the one in the big iPad, the battery life is pretty good. It shouldn't run down 15% in 45 minutes under normal circumstances / usage. Mine doesn't.

Tigerlily - Are you having better luck with battery life with the replacement Mini?

Yes, I sure am. I was able to exchange it and got a black one which is what I really wanted. A bit surprised the back in not aluminum like my Ipad 1 though. The replacement works just fine and takes about two days for me to go through the battery and that is with pretty heavy use around 4-5 hours per day. I disable most of the aps like Netflix, ABC player, Photobucket, Location services & the Bluetooth when I am not using them. I have found that this greatly cuts the battery usage as my Ipad is not searching and updating during the day. At this point as with my Ipad I primarily use it for internet surfing and maybe an occasional YouTube video.

I receive the Zagg keyboard case and was able to find an adapter for a regular usb to a mini. This was one thought I had for a mouse. I have also looked at Bluetooth Mouse as well. In my research though I have found that you cannot have two Bluetooth devices running at the same time. Also the Ipad and Mini do not have a pointer function that allows mouse use unless you jailbreak your ipad and then you can download a mouse program. I looked at this for a while but I don't want to jailbreak my Ipad as my luck I would end up bricking it. Also I am not very technical so it is definitely not something I would attempt myself.

Overall I like the keyboard and think it will be usefull to take notes with when my classes start. The only thing I am not quite fond of is that you have to use the kickstand to have it operate like a mini netbook. I was kind of hoping that it would stay upright just by opening it. I guess I can live with this though. I am most interested in a Clamshell keyboard case for the mini but they are still in production and won't be on the market for a month or two. I will probably get one of those and if I like it better than the Zagg I will put the Zagg on Ebay. I paid half price for mine so I am confident I could make my money back on it.

I had no issues Jailbreaking my iPhone 4s last yr ....... it is a painless process

really, but if it makes you uncomfortable then of course by all means avoid it

I did not know about the mouse issue, that is too bad
