You need to have a Load Calc done. You could introduce zoning into your house. It is not the best option but being that you most likely dont want to rip things out and start over it would be the cheapest. I had to put that into my house and it made all the difference. I was in the same situation as you except I also had to replace my condenser because of the owners neglect. My house was 5 yrs old at the time.

I had a great contractor and would be happy to give you his number if you would like. There are plenty of HVAC forums out there also. I have posted them a few times so if you search you could find them.

The past few days my unit was running non stop. Insids got up to 80 degrees and thats where it toped off. If I had just got a recharge shouldn't my a/c be working right? I change the filters every month! The unit is 4 years. Theres no freezing on any of the outside lines. I understand that its hot outside and the unit may not cool as good as if there was less humidity. What can be done?
thanks

How good are your windows? Do you have a lot of southern exposure during the majority of the day? You could get an attic fan installed, or put an inexpensive window unit upstairs.

Do a web search on your windows. Unless you upgraded during construction or your builder used high end windows to begin with, you maybe surprised at their performance. (or lack thereof)

make sure to do research before getting an attic fan to a newer home. they can do more harm than good to your bank account and comfort level.

Really what harm could be done? I already put a whole house fan in 2 year ago. That really helps but its only effective when the outside air is comfortable.

there are lots of forum discussions (other forums then this one) that go into it. do a search on the cons of attic fans, but here is an example Attic fan pros and cons [Archive] - DoItYourself.com Community Forums but the jist of it is that if an attic fan will cool your house, your house is not insulated (sealed) correctly.

best bet is to ensure you have good insulation. my house was not old, but i added 10 inches of blow in insulation. the builder did a horrible job there and the original owner must not have checked it out before moving in. i also added radiant barrier to my attic and that helped a ton. i had that in TX so that is why i did it here. that was about $100 to do, insulation was under $300 and i havent had an elec bill over $180 yet this summer in my 2700 sq ft house.
