Ok, I know you guys say Bounty Hunter isn't that great but this is what I am looking at. 23 Reviews for Bounty Hunter Tracker IV
He is only 11. From what I've seen the Tesoro's they are out of my price range. Think this will be ok? Maybe as he grows up I'll get a better one if he keeps the interest up.

His age is why I thought about the Radio Shack variety since it would be a reasonably priced "starter" till you see if he sticks with it. Good luck!!

Check with Ron, see what his current price is on the Garrett ACE250. If it's within your price range, even if it's the top end, it's a better way to spend the money than the bounty hunter. For an 11 year old, the Bounty hunter will be ok for a couple years. I keep mentioning the 250 because it is so much better of a machine and not all that much more than the BH and it's more likely to find stuff and keep the boy interested in the hobby. But like I said, for an 11 y.o., the BH will be fine.

The problem with metal detecting is you have to do a lot of digging. If you get a crappy machine that causes extra, unnecessary digging, you're going to lose interest real quick.

I just use 2 metal coat hangers unbent to straight rods and then bend a 4 inch 90 degree handle on the ends... 95% of the people I teach how to use them can do it right away... held the right way and moving, the rods WILL cross each other over metal objects and separate over pools of water.... I actually teach this to US Navy Electronics Personnel so they can find buried cables when the expensive electronic toys are broken or failing...

It sounds so un-scientific, but it does seem to work. When the water company came out to put in a new meter, one of the guys used divining rods to find the pipes, and found them more accurately than the metal detector.
