For just a few bucks it could save your ass. I have only rented a car twice in my life but I've seen the nightmares others have gone thru.

Ummmm.... no... it's practically the cost of the actual car rental and is charged daily.

I always thought that my auto coverage would apply if I needed it?

Last time I rented from Enterprise, they tried that 30 second inspection crap on me. I was taking the car to FL and back, and knew there were possibilities for bumps, scratches, accidents etc.

I went out, re-inspected the car, made note of all the dings, scratches and dents and made the guy come note them on my contract. I've heard stories of this happening to others as well.

You learned a lesson. A very expensive lesson. We've all been there.

It does, but if you don't purchase the rental cars insurance and they file a claim against your insurance company, they will charge your insurance company the daily rental cost for that car for each day it is "out of service". If it takes their repair shop three weeks to fix the ding... your insurance will be charged the daily rental cost of that car for each of those days on top of the cost to repair the car.

Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong thing then. I can remember paying a few bucks extra for something.

I'm confused. Your first sentence says it will be taken care of, then the rest of your post goes to say you will be charged everything.
