Outsmarted your own tip, bozo

A coworker and I got breakfast at an airport recently. Ordered the exact same meal. When he brings the bill, it's one bill. When told we would like separate bills, he points out that the bill has two sections, and one total of both, so we dont need separate checks. Hmmmm, okay. Neither of us has anything smaller than a twenty, and the total is 33 and change so each of us handed him one $20. Each of our bills was $16 and some change.

So, what does Captain Smartass do? Brings us back a five and a one and the silver change. Effectively trying to force us to give him the six dollars for a tip. Now, barring that, he was going to get $3 from each of us. when we asked if we could have the change in ones, he balked, and told us "I'm sure you can figure it out". When we insisted, he did grusgingly go and get us five ones. And we each left him one of those. If he had said, whoops, and been nice about getting us the ones, he still would have gotten his six dollars.

The lesson is don't try and force customers into a tip. People don't like being forced. All the good service in the world can be ruined by one act of asshattedness.

If it had been me and he said "I'm sure you can figure it out", I would have looked straight at him, said Yup! Sure can! and pocketed it all and walked.

I'd have told him I don't mind stiffing you on the tip since this is an airport and I'll probably never see you again

Coming late to this thread, but I'd have talked to the manager, either in person, or electronically.

I had breakfast at a little place in Orland International Airport (MCO), I think it was, a few years back. The service was excellent, the food phenomenal, the price reasonable. I not only tipped 20 percent (my usual), but emailed the company and offered kudos. Received a reply back from the manager and a coupon for the next time I'm through Orlando. He said he put my email up on the bulletin board for the employees.

I'd have used it as a 'teachable' moment and said "You would have likely gotten it all for good service. However, by being a dick head, you get nothing. Let that be a little lesson in not being a dick head as you move through life. Dick Head."

I have done that. I don't play when it comes to tipping, you either earn it or you don't and being rude like that gets you nothing.

But the thing is, he probably thinks this is how you were going to tip him all along and that's why you asked for the change.

Then he is doomed to a life of disappointment, and nothing I can do will help.
