Absolute divorce

Can anyone tell me the steps of proceeding with an absolute divorce doing this yourself? I understand after a prolonged seperation (8 years) it can be filed through the courts. Do you still need to actually serve the paper work to the other person? Can it be mailed? Like by priority which needs a signature? I have the papaerwork from online so I can get this done, but am unsure of the steps to proceed. Also, do not have the new address for where this person lives. I have a P.O. box..

Courthouse has all the information.. including all the documentation.

Even free classes. They can't give you legal advice but can tell you the steps and how to do them.

We went up to the courthouse together, filled out the paperwork and we both signed it same day.. Saved MONTHS of processing and serving time.

We got the court date a week later.

To answers a couple of your ?s...I did a self divorce in 2000 or 2001 and I did have to file it thru the courts, have to have someone mail the other party the divorce papers and yes, you need that person's signature. You can't mail the papers b/c you have to have complete seperation from the soon to be ex. Have a friend, parent, etc do it. Hope this helps and best of luck to you!!

NOT!

I think me and my wife going hand in hand to the courthouse to file kind of flies in the face of your "complete seperation".

If I remember correctly the file clerk told me to mail them to her or handcarry them to her, when I told her "She's standing right here, can she just sign them today??"

Look, " Itsbob"....I was just telling them what they had told me when I went there about 8 or 9 years ago. You don't need to take it so personal...geez....if things have changed, then great...but when I did it, that is the info I was given. Chill

Me and my soon to be Ex did the paperwork the same day so there would be no waiting time, just the court date since everything was uncontested. Although we didn't get our court date until 2 months later, it is still sooner than having to have all of the paperwork mailed, answered, etc.

Most divorce lawyers consultations are free. i would recommend going and at least talking to a lawyer first, even if you must pay a fee you would be must better off. I thought my divorce would be relatively easy and cheap, cost me almost 12k by the time the BS was done......dont get caught being unprepared.
