15 Years

Since we were busy on Halloween, I didn't get much chance to do anything special, but I can come here and spill this to the whole world and embarrass the hell out of my wife...hehe.

15 years ago this past Saturday, I made the best decision of my entire life. 15 years ago this past Saturday was the end of a pretty bad month for me. I was dumped by a girl I thought I was in love with. I had wrecked my new car. My parents got divorced. Hell I think my dog died too, I just remember October of 1994 seemed like the worst month imaginable. Turned out, one day made it one of the best dates ever.

I had seen this girl in choir and even though I was dating someone else at the time, I couldn't help but find something about her attractive. Was just that "spark" as they say. When we would warm up our voices before choir practice, I would stand next to her, but instead of doing our "Ahhhs" for warm ups, I'd be saying stupid and silly stuff to her, just to get a rise out of her. And more often than not, I did get a rise out of her.

We did a musical that year, "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown". I was cast as Schroeder, and this girl was one of the backup singers. We would have to stay late after school for rehearsals, and especially after my break-up, I took that chance to talk to this girl and get to know her a little bit. Like I said, something about her just attracted me to her. I don't know if it was our love of rock music, both of us being natural clowns, or what.

We had a rehearsal the day of Halloween in 1994. She wore this costume of a playing card to school. The Queen of Spades....or Clubs....one of those two. After rehearsal, there me and her were, sitting in the parking lot, standing by my car, just talking. I really liked this girl, but I was nervous as all hell, especially after getting dumped just a few weeks earlier. But curiosity, and sheer attractiveness got the better of me. And being the smooth pimp daddy of all time that I was, I busted out my best line.

"So hey...if I was to do something kind of weird right now, you woudn't get offended, would you?"

Reading how that looks in text, okay that might not have been the best line, but I was NERVOUS, ok?? Sheesh. Anyways, this girl kind of chuckled and said...

"Well, that depends on what you do."

Without thinking, without hesitation, I walked around the car door, moved in, and kissed her right on the lips. No obviously I had kissed other girls before, but there wasn't nothing quite like this kiss. It was one of them kisses like at the end of one of those coming of age flicks right before Sixpence None The Richer comes on for the ending credits. Just a long, slow, warm kiss. And no I didn't shove my tongue down her throat.

Well, I don't remember how long we kissed. Seriously, I lost all track of time, but all I know was, I kissed her...and she didn't slap me...so I figured I was good to go. When I looked at her, I could tell she was surprised, but she was calm about it and I said to her...

"Glad you weren't offended."

Well, I didn't know it then, but that was the start of an amazing ride that continues to this day. And now 15 years, two kids, and several cats later, I re-enact that parking lot scene still to this day with her. And every time I kiss her, I still feel that same electric rush I felt the first time I kissed her. And people get a chuckle when I tell them how we started dating on Halloween. What's great is the look of mortification on their faces when i remark we married on Friday the 13th. And seriously...neither date was planned in advanced. It's just how the cards fell.

So, I know she's going to read this, and I hope she's not too embarrassed with me telling that story, but I did just want to take a moment to tell Severa that I love her very much, and there isn't no one I'd have rather spent the last 15 years with. Up and down, bad and good, we've been through it all, and just want you to know that 15 years is just the start babe. We got a lot more years to go.

Love ya babe.
