Seems to me that usually the guys with the "trophy wife" wind up unhappy and trading them in every 5 years or so. And they're usually dicks themselves.

From what I can tell, most guys want women who make them feel good about themselves. High maintenance women aren't good at doing that because they have their own issues and need attention. (That's not to say there aren't great looking women who are also nice and down to earth.)

As far as the 2 or 2.5 looking guys, sometimes I think that they go on so few dates that they aim high because they figure they have to make it count.
