Mid Night pooper

Okay, I am at a loss here. My 3 yr old retreiver has started acting in a very weird way. First it started with wake up calls at about 2:00 am to go outside. Now it is wake up calls at about 1:00 am, goes out for 15-20 minutes, comes back to the door, I let him in. I go back to sleep and wake up to a nice pile...

I have tried everything, including using the crate once more. He goes through the night but when I let him out in the morning, he doesnt go. I let him back in, go shower and wham..... another pile.

This has been going on for about 1 month now.

Is this behaviour or should I take him to the vet?

I would take him to the vet with a sample just to be on the safe side!!
You will feel better that you did and found nothing that if you don't take him and there is a serious problem. But that is just me pets are family too!!

If this is not normal, then I would check it out at the vet. Cats and dogs say a lot with the bowel habits. Sometimes it is stress, but this doesn't sound like that, from what you've said.

try walking him instead of just letting him out. then you can make sure he has gone outside and praise him for it when he does

And if he doesn't make poopies be prepared to spend the night outside in your PJ's following the dog around in the dark. Sounds silly but I've noticed that a nearby dog in heat or cats trasping through the property will throw my dog off. It's as if they can't do their business when there are distractions. Sorry I don't know an solution other than confining your dog to a small area at night. Nothing like starting your day off with poopies and what's worse, unexpectedly stepping in it. What a way to start the day.

Do you feed him too late in the evening? I try not to feed mine too late to avoid night time poopies.
