hair loss! please help.

i have a rotti mix who will be one in sept. In the last month iv been noticing allot of hair around his crate when i go to vacum, which he is only kept in at night (while we are sleeping to spare the cat :)) i thought he was just blowing his puppy furr. I gave him a bath monday and relized that he has some thinning spots. His skin isnt nasty at all... just a little dry. He doesnt seem to be in any pain either, thank god! Any suggestions? He goes to the vet on tuesday.

I would ask the vet to do a Thyroid Work-up.
That could be a cause.
Google Canine Thyroid Disease and read the symptoms.
It's easily treatable.

i looked it up and this is what it said:The symptoms can be legion and sometimes contradictory: lethargy, mental lassitude, weight gain, dull coat, skin infections, constipation, diarrhea, cold intolerance, skin odor, hair loss, greasy skin, dry skin, reproductive problems, aggression, and more.
He does have the hair loss and dry skin. But i will most def ask the vet about it. thanks again :)

Look up seasonal alopecia. My boxer has this and the vet says there is nothing that can be done about it once it starts. It happened last year and his hair all grew back...so far this year he still has thin spots and looks really patchy. We plan on starting him on medicine at the end of the year and hope it doesn't get any worse next year. It doesn't bother him and his skin is perfectly fine...he just isn't as pretty!!!

For the dry skin you might want to try olive oil or vegetable oil; just a little in his food.

Puppy Dog may simply have dry skin that he stratches or gnaws at, resulting in bald or thinning spots. Another possibility is, of course fleas and/or ticks.
If he will let you, check him.

If there is any redness or other discoloration, you might want to get him to a vet. I heard; on the forums actually; that ointments and salves for humans can cause more harm than good if you use them on your pet(s).

I will def look up the seasonal alopecia its actually does sound very similar.

As for the fleas he has no problems with us checking him. he is on front line and wev kept a pretty close eye on making sure him & our heeler doesnt have any. It isnt discolord in any way just getting thin and patching, but we are taking him to the vet on tuesday. so we will seee...

It could be allergies. When I adopted Max, he was new to the east coast and was reacting to the grass. There was almost no fur on his belly. We took him to a special vet who prescribed allergy shots and benedryl.

Does the fur loss only seem to be concentrated in the crate? Is there a mat, blanket or towel at the bottom of the crate? Maybe your dog is reacting to that (also consider detergent or fabric softener for the blanket/towel)?

Around the crate is where i normally find the most hair. I did have like a wool blaket he slept on. I did take that out. We are taking him to the vet this afternoon.... i do think its an allergy of some sort.

Could be food alergies. Soy wheat and corn are BAD for animals.
