Two Long-Time SMCM Employees Fired

This is surprising. Two good people.

Quote:
St. Mary’s College of Maryland has reportedly fired two long-time employees with a combined total of 62 years of service. In a letter to the college community on July 2, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aide Pat Goldsmith reported that the positions of Office Administrator Lisa Crowe, with 37 years at the college, and Director of Admissions Rich Edgar, with 25 years, had been eliminated.

Good people are fired all the time.. If they are good they will be able to find another "good" job.

With 37 years she should retire anyway.

Working hard is no guarantee of employment either. If it was, I'd be a pro baseball player.

The title is misleading. Their positions were eliminated... they were not fired. Fired implies they did something wrong.

They probably had pensions that were rapidly increasing in value.

That had a LOT to do with my layoff

First, their positions were eliminated, they were not fired. Fired is a word used to invoke emotion in this case as something sinister.

Second, businesses, and yes colleges are businesses have to rescructure from time to time to pursue new goals and correct deficiencies. Why would SMC be any different. Both of these people judging from their years of service were likely high up the pay scale and potentially in the retirement window anyway.

Third, I find it ironic that the story, to me anyway, seems to lay the blame on the lack of diversity. Funny that a liberal college is using the flagship mantra to excuse that which they blame big business for constantly, the heartless termination of good people.

Of course it is sad when anyone loses employment but it will be interesting watching a liberal big business organization wrestle with itself

We’ve combined two traditional assistant director positions to create an Associate Director of Admissions and Financial Aid position. We anticipate the creation of one or two additional new positions that will create vital linkages among admissions, financial aid, and other key constituents.
They should apply for these positions.
