It seems that things are done out of a manual these days. There needs to be more "getting to the bottom of things" so the real problems can be solved and fixed.

I do not support zero-tolerance, but I do find the idea of some middleschoolers with weapons scary. When I was substituting I caught one eating cotton balls. I'd rather that one not have a knife.

Regardless, I remember a time when it was highly unusual for any male older than maybe 8 or 9 to NOT have a pocketknife on his person. I'll bet every boy/guy in my schools carried one, and we had not one single incident - from K through HS - that I recall.

First adopted in schools in 1989 in the Republican Stronghold states of California and NY.. I MIGHT concede KY..
