| Didn't St. Mary's tried something different a few years ago? Went in a week early in Aug. had extra time off at Christmas. What were the results of that experiment since it only lasted one year. I know it screwed up some people's family vacation. If it does not save money why change it? Do they just sit up on Moakley St.and figure that since they were elected that they must do something?

| If I can remember right, the final schedule was not annouced till the spring and our vacation picks have to be in by early Jan. It was a multiple generation, mutiple family vacation in the outer banks covering grandparents several of their children and grandchildren. Multiple families coordinate their vacation, rented the house then the county puts out the schedule.Unless there is a significant benefit for the change, why change. The guy was pissed.

| If the school year hadn't changed in decades, it should be safe to make that assumption

| And I ASSumed theyd leave it alone in their infinite wisdom and Id plan a longer winter vaca with my family the next year. However- I figured assuming rarely works out so I did not plan ahead. Glad I didnt- apparently whatever the point of that long vacation didnt work out (at least for those making the decision) I heard they tried in order to turn the heat off for 2 week (save money) - so didnt they? I never did hear why they changed back - if parents complained or what. Personally- it makes/made no difference to me and year round school wouldnt either. I would expect people to complain MORE that the kids get too many days off- since its still 180 days per calender year. |

| I got no dog in this fight, but I do think it's sad that we're administrating away our kids' childhood. Summer vacation is a time-honored American tradition; families could get away for a couple of weeks; kids went off with grandparents or other relatives for the summer; they went to camp. Why on earth would we want to take that away from them? |

| The problem is that they don't know what to do with themselves during their days off. I know I'm an "oldster" but we had over 3 full months off in the Summer and we never had a problem keeping busy ALL Summer long.
