How do we get special education

work in Southern Maryland ? The local politicians have no control over the public school system, except to give them funding every year. After that, they have little control but all the responsibility. How do we get the special education program looked at in Calvert. Help.

Have you discussed your particular question with the School Board?

with numerous parents and their concerns. They skate in the gray area. getting into this now, but I have been told that prior written notice is not getting out in a standard process (which I think it is supposed to be) there's minimal info on their web site, and you really have to dig for it.

What's the problem? I know a number of people with kids in special ed in Calvert, and they all speak highly of it.

If it's just the info available on the web, why not go to the Board of Ed and talk to them?

Go or call the BOE. Its not just because the info isn't on the web. Vist their offices in Prince Frederick, question, or have an IEP meeting. Then, you'll understand. I have been trying to figure this out for a year.

Damn I thought all you needed was a short yellow bus. Darn, ya think you know a little about something.

Seriously, more power to those who work in that area!

A "short bus?" Nice. Advice. That's all I asked for.

The teachers are hepful and sincere, but without help from the the top, hands are tied.

And this was a last attempt for help. Effort has been made to get services from the Board. Maybe take a lesson from St. Mary's: work hard and be nice.

As for your "short bus" comment. May you never have the burden of caring for, and loving, a disabled child. If that same child was waving to you from the "short bus" as a parent, friend or relative, you'd understand why your "short bus" comment is pathetic.

Dealt with the system in Calvert since my son was 3 and diagnosed autistic. He attended Calvert schools all the way through Patuxent High School. I'll admit I had no luck at all with Appeal Elementary. I had to send him to Calvert Country above Prince Frederick and then to the Middle School. A long bus ride, but worth it. Patuxent High was excellent in that they taught him more functional living skills. He stayed there until he turned 21. Now he goes to the Center for Life Enrichment and they supervise him in a job. Been through lots of IEP's and had concerns about his future. Between the school, the Health Department and social services, I got answers.
