Dear JPC

I just want to say that even though I didn't agree with your campaign platform, not even in the slightest, I still think it's great that you participated in the election process. Most people sit around and complain about their government, but very few actually step up to the plate and try to do something about it.

And this goes for Becky and Flaherty and the rest of the candidates (the ones I DID agree with ). I admire those of you who are trying to make a difference in our state and counties. Running for office is draining and expensive and I would never do it. So I'm appreciative of those who will.

Shoot!

The way you were going on about National Security and the way this country out to be run - the other day - I'd have voted your skinny buns into office in a heartbeat!

Give it some more thought..........

I second Vrai's comments. It's easy to forget that people go into politics to try to make a difference in their communities.

I thought about running for office that when I was in my 20s. But I realized that I didn't have the personality to be a politician. I valued my privacy and I would have been uncomfortable with reporters and opposing candidates digging into every nook and cranny of my life, even if there was no dirt to find. I was reclusive and I wouldn't have enjoyed speaking to strangers at political functions to ask them for their votes. Also, I would have been uncomfortable receiving criticism from opponents and strangers, since political races can often get personal.

Thanks... I agree with your comments concerning JPC and Flaherty as well. I hope they are still on line and still taking part because as we all know... it's not over yet.

I hear that some of the votes weren't counted because of the computer rebooting.... I know that rebooting was an issue at several of the computers in the 1st district [Calvert]. I hope we do go back to paper ....

I still say we should be writing in names on the ballot in this election in Calvert County. Between CARL and DACCA there has been so much controversy that the real issues have been sidelined.... and that just isn't right!

I was talking to an Independent last night who was really upset that the people she wanted on the ballot for the 7th didn't make it through the primary and she had no vote in the process. While I agree with the premise that the Primary is a way for the parties to select who they will put on the ballot, the process is somewhat unfair to those concerned and informed voters who study all of the candidates and all of the issues.

I would love to see a huge write in vote for November. It might call attention to the issues and put the winners on notice that the people don't want those issues to be sidelined anymore..... I for one plan to write in Tice, Flaherty, and Donelly.... Patrick had some excellent views on taxation and keeping the Government out of our homelife and Donelly [I believe] has some excellent views on open Government....

I for one ran because there are a number of issues that I thought should see some light of day in the polling booth....

OK I'm off the soap box [for now]....

I am going to have to disagree and I do not mean to rain on your parade or anything but geez. It is over and you lost big. Doesn't make you a bad person, or wrong, it just means that you had no support, couldn't convince constituents that you represented their views thus you were an unappealing alternative. We are not talking about a squeaker, a close one, up watching the polls late into the night while the lead switches back and forth, it was a loss by what, a 2-1 margin, last in a 4 way race?

The "real" issues, or just the ones you thought were important and were rejected by the voters? How could any reasonable politician/candidate try to publicly convince people to throw away their votes by writing in names that were rejected in the primary? Below you talk about how independents are cheated by the 2 party primary system, yet you advocate other voters throw away their votes by writing in someone who has no chance at all of winning?

Then perhaps that independent should do some soul searching and decide which party more closely reflects their personal values and join one. Being a registered Democrat, or Republican only means that you are restricted in primaries. You can vote for your party candidate who you desire or even voice your opinion by not voting at all. You are free to vote your conscience in the general.

I am not in Calvert, but if I was I have to say that your continued chant of "it's not over" and "write in Tice" erodes your legitimacy as a future candidate. To me as a voter a vanquished candidate who refuses to accept the results of a large loss with some degree of dignity indicates a serious lack of judgement and logic. Some see your "defiance" of the "establishment" as admirable. I see it as "disregard" for the will of the voters which is not admirable. It smells like "loony".

I do admire you in that you decided to join the fray and do something. You lost, hell every candidate has lost. But instead of wanking about it and causing people to question your mental state and driving them away in future elections, you should use the next 4 years to refine, reconstruct and repackage your campaign and try again.

My opinions only

Sorry - not a big write-in fan which seems to be a waste of your vote. Sure you may make a statement for the moment. But once the winners are sworn in your issues will be forgotten and the ones in power will set the priorities.

Rather than write-ins your efforts may be better spent right now finding like-minded candidates to carry your issues on and networking with those politicians who are still involved in the process and can potentially win.

The write-in deal is just short term sour grapes. If you get 100 write-ins, but there's still a candidate who is willing to work with you on your issues if they are elected, then they are going to need those wasted votes. The long term benefit now will be in creating relationships with those who will be making the decisions about things that are meaningful to you in the future.

That's why I love the forums so much... I learn so much.... and what you are saying makes total sense....

OK... so you and Pete say that making a point is throwing away a vote...

I believe action taken in the polling place is never throwing away a vote.

I plan on writing in my name. If I am the only one that does that, then so be it... but my vote will be to say stop ignoring the needs of the 18 Calvert County Communities that have roads to maintain....

If others choose to write in "issues" or "roads" or my name... their vote is not wasted either, IMO, because it says something.... just like going to the polls and choosing "none of the above" by using the "no vote" option... is not throwing away a vote.

I know I lost the Primary... and I know that I won't win a seat even on a write in ballot.... but the action is a vote... It's not used very often but it is available....

I ran for office because the needs of the people who live in 22 of the Calvert County Communities [18 of which maintain roads] are ignored. If a discussion [and eventually a solution] resulted from my action... then we won because we were totally ignored until this point....

I spoke with the other candidates about the issues facting the 18 communities that have roads... and they were totally ignorant to the problem or unwilling to look into solutions... I don't mean this in a bad way... I mean it's just been ignored for so long that no one knows there are real viable solutions....
