Republicans vs. Democrates in the elections

I was just looking through the election results for the primaries and couldn't help but notice the disparity between the number of votes cast by the Democrates compared to those of the Republicans. With easily a two to one ration in favor of the Dems.

Do you think this is because there are so many more registered Demoncrates in this state or is it just that the Republican voters are lazy and don't get out for the primaries?

I noticed that too. I think it is a combination of things. 1. Many Republicans were running unopposed. 2. Republicans are lazy with regard to primaries when there is no large issue.

In St. Mary's, about 4500 Republicans voted and about 8000 Democrats voted.

I would expect the General election turnout to improve significantly on both sides.

Democrats traditionally have open primaries and Republicans have closed primaries. Whats the use of voting when the winners are hand picked in advance.

Now this is interesting. Did the Democrats allow Independents and other minority parties to vote in their primary? Because that would explain why there were so many "Democrat" voters.

No, at least not in St. Mary's. I've been an non-aligned voter since I became old enough to vote 22 years ago. I voted in the 2000 primary when the GOP opened theirs to independents that year.

But this year I was tempted to register as a Democrat (and then switch back as soon as the primary was over) just to vote against JPC. I felt revulsion that he justified his non-payment of child support as an act of political protest.

I have no idea what Luther is talking about...

I think what he means is the general lack of competition within the party primary. Although, this year, two pretty important contests in the Commissioner President Judges race were on the Republican Primary ballot.

If you compare us to Calvert with a whole host of whackos in both parties competing for 5 Commissioner seats, I'd say people are rather pleased with the way St. Mary's County Government is being run and don't see the need to step up and change it in a big way.

for the most part the Republicans ran unopposed, no reason for the Republican voters to show up.

the Fights going to be in November when Steele trounces Cardin (hopefully fingers crossed lol)

Steele vs. Cardin will be great fun to watch. We will see how the Democrat base chooses to resolve this vote now that Queazy is out of the running.

I would say they'd steal Steeles credit report but oops to late ( Link ).

or maybe they'd throw Oreo Cookies at him and says its ok to use Racist tactics against him since he's a Republican , but oops to late for that too ( Link )
