Jeez. I graduated in '78 and didn't move back to Maryland for another 12 years. So I don't remember what state office he held. I was guessing.

All I remember was that damned speech and how it had nothing to do with anyone graduating that day.

He hasn't done anything to improve his standing in my eyes since.

I'll vote for the other guy anyway.

Be glad you didn't have Jesse Jackson speak at your ceremony.

Or Roy Dyson .... actually, now that I think about it, Dyson spoke at my brother's. The year I graduated, our class sponsor, didn't want Dyson (then in the House of Reps) because she was sick of hearing him campaign at graduation every year. She got some Washington Redskin. He kept telling us to go out into the world and "kick ass." I think Dyson was back the next year.

Let me mention - I detest this man. He spoke many years ago at my high school graduation, before he was in Congress. I think he might have been State Comptroller or something. Instead of exhorting a new crop of graduates - he gave a campaign speech. My dad was furious.

I'm not crazy about the fact that our district is gerry-mandered such that PG and Southern Maryland are bound together - but because of population, we're always going to get whomever THEY vote in. But for Pete's sake, can't anyone at least run against him?

I still get the shivers when I recall how he came up and shook my hand while I was helping with the recovery/cleanup the morning after the tornado hit La Plata in April 2002.

Actually, there is a gentleman named Peter Kuhnert, from the Constitution Party, running as a write-in candidate. I have been unable to uncover much about him on-line however. The only thing I have been able to uncover is this entry from Project Vote Smart. This does not even list a home town for Mr. Kuhnert, and his campaign address is a post office box in Martinsburg, WV, so I have to wonder how serious this campaign is.

Kuhnert, 44, has worked for Anne Arundel County since 1987. He also opposes same-sex marriage and affirmative action program, and believes tighter laws on illegal immigration are needed to make America more secure. His goal is to get more votes than Green Party nominee Steve Warner of Solomons, whose name will appear on the ballot. Even that could be a Herculean task with his name not on the ballot in the race against Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-5th,Md.).

What do you think about this from US News & World Report:

Washington Whispers
By Paul Bedard and Angie C. Marek

Posted Sunday, October 29, 2006

Get ready to hear a lot more about the Terps, Francis Scott Key, and the glorious blue crab if the Democrats take charge of the House in this week's midterm elections. That's because Mr. Maryland, Rep. Steny Hoyer, is set to move in as the House majority leader, the No. 2 slot behind likely Speaker Nancy Pelosi, by reason of, in no small part, his coast-to-coast campaigning-37 House districts in October alone. "Yeah, you could call him 'Mr. Maryland,'" says a pal. More than any other Maryland House member, Hoyer wears his state colors for all to see. Start with the University of Maryland, his alma mater. He's a regular at Terrapin games and even has a carved turtle on his desk. His betting currency of choice is lump crabmeat. Then there are his replicas of historical Maryland scenes like the Revolutionary War battle at Fort McHenry, which led Key to write "the Star-Spangled Banner."

There's also a softer side to the 67-year-old "Silver Fox." He has helped to establish "Judy Centers," named for his late wife, throughout the state to help in early-childhood development. And every day, he brings his English springer spaniel, Charlotte, to his office, where she guards the Maryland seal at the entrance.

But don't ask him about moving his Maryland museum to the majority leader's office. Like a superstitious skipjack captain, he's not going there until it happens.

I think that the editors of U. S. News & World Report should have done a little more proof-reading. The last time I checked it was the Battle of Baltimore, during the War of 1812, that inspired the penning of "The Star-Spangled Banner".
