Cutting up a whole chicken....

I bought a whole chicken and was going to cook it whole but then, the boys asked me to make chicken soup instead. I have never cut up a whole chicken before and now, I know why.

If you're making soup, why cut the chicken up? Just plunk it whole into the water, boil it until the meat falls off the bone, and voila.

I typically do just that but since this chicken was so big, I needed to cut it up to have room in the pot.

I have been cutting up whole chickens since I started cooking. What is the big deal? I haven't priced them lately, but it used to be cheaper to buy whole fryers and cut them up your self. I mostly buy whole oven stuffer roasters when they are on sale now and cut them up. They are much meatier then the parts sold and cheaper, if you catch a good sale.

It is cheaper but the whole cracking of bones, feeling for joints, well, I was having a tough time with it.

I buy leg and wing quarters and cut it up because the cost is so much less than legs, thighs or wings. Been doing that since I was a kid.

I don't use chicken breasts for cooking much, so I don't get the whole bird.

Kitchen shears works REALLY well for items like this - they cut right through bones.

I get you girl. I will not even remove the innard bag out of a chicken or turkey. I have cut leg quarters before and unless you hit it just right it's a saw job. I cook whole chickens as is and even though I prefer them cut up. I have no idea how to chop up the bird.

I used my laptop and the youtube video I posted. I had to pause it a couple of times because I was so grossed out!
