Dehydrator

Hi,
Does anyone have info on a brand of food dehydrator to buy? The good and the bad. I want to get one for mainly making jerky

I have a "NESCO", American Harvester. Think I bought it at Walmart a few years ago. I made 4 batches of jerky in 2 days this weekend. It does a nice job but takes a ton of soaking to clean it up though.

I love jerky! Dried fruit is good too. I tried to make fruit roll ups once......... it didn't work.

I make 40-50 lbs a year for Christmas presents. If you plan on making a lot or want the unit to last a long time, stay away from the Nesco/American Harvest/Walmart cheapos. I have an Excaliber. The advantages are: No need to rotate trays for even drying, large surface area, built to last. I wore out 3 of the cheapos before I broke down and got the Excaliber, had it for 7-8years and it is just like new. Now if you really want to spend some serious bucks, go to Cabelas.com or Gander Mountain. I don't make anywhere near that much, but I've never had to rotate trays with my Nesco.

I just checked their website. They have factory reconditioned ones for $169.00 with 10 year warrantee. That is a good buy. Also, get the 9 tray, the extra room is nice. And you don't have to fill it, just use what you need.

I have an Excalibur as well, a 5 tray. I haven't used during my pregnancy but am getting ready to use it again here soon.
