It's ok. Fish do it all the time.

Until the umbilical cord is pinched or severed. That's why baby animals (I've delivered plenty of calves, lambs, etc) sometimes aspirate fluid if they're breech, because the cord gets pinched or severed before their head is out of the birth canal. It only makes sense to me that this would be the case if the infant's cord gets pinched if he/she's underwater.

I've never seen an animal in nature go into a river to deliver.

My friend did this with her 5th child. She LOVED it. She was able to pull the baby out herself and said it was the most amazing experience ever and wished she had done it with the others.

This was offered to me when I got to the hospital. But due to complications I wasn't able to have a water birth. Too bad I'm not having any more or I would op for it.

Well after having 2 kids I can certainly say there is nothing pretty about it either. All the blood, fluids, poop, sweat, and tears... The end result was beautiful but the process was anything but. I can't look back at 27 hours of labor with my first without a shudder of horror. My 2nd was fast, too fast for an epidural darn it, but violent and horribly painful. I remember being shocked when it was over seeing the linens and floor, it looked like a mass murder had taken place. To the unprepared or the squeamish it could indeed look damn disgusting.
