Does anyone follow the poker?

Phil Ivey finally won his 6th bracelet last night. It was in NL 2-7 Lowball, not exactly the most prestigious event at the World Series of Poker, but a bracelet nonetheless.

No.

Watching people play cards on TV is the fault of the NHL and their players who saddled the free world with a horrible strike that, like most catastrophes, the greatest evil is the unintended and unforeseen consequences.

Like people playing cards on TV to fill suddenly empty programming slots.

Most of what's wrong with our nation AND the world today can be traced back to 2004-2005. That is when oil started going horrible wrong. That is when the wars starting really coming apart. That is when An Inconvenient Truth was being made. And it is all because people who were supposed to be minding the shop were looking at all the money they had in the markets and their homes and decided they, too, could be professional card players.

Then, darkness and pestilence came upon us all.

Yeah, it started about a week ago. The events usually get played long before they are televised on TV. This year there are 56 events before the main event - it doesn't start for another month.

I think most of the people that follow the goings on in the poker world are, or have been, fairly serious players themselves - it's just interesting to them. That segment has been around for a while, even before the WSOP and other poker events started getting significant coverage on TV. I don't really find the TV broadcasts all that interesting, and don't watch them much anymore.

But, your whole world started falling apart in 2004-2005 theory explains a lot of things for me.

9 people in the known universe who were not already pros, or friends or family of same, had ever heard of Texas Hold 'em prior to the hockey strike.

Yes. And evil rose from the ashes.

No, there was a significant poker world out there which remained unknown to most people, even before Moneymaker's big win in 2003. That was the event that attracted legitimate mainstream attention, and that is when the poker boom started. His win, as an unknown amateur, was huge for the poker industry, and helped a lot of people get rich.

There were probably tens of thousands of professional, or semi-professional, poker players out there before that. There may not have been many known, 'named' professionals, but there were a lot of grinders who made their living playing poker - sometimes legally, sometimes not.
