Scouting opportunities at JPPM
Is your scouting troop looking for a unique educational experience? Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum offers opportunities for Girl and Boy scouts to earn badges and have fun though various programs right here in Calvert County.
Program offerings vary from Indian Lore and Archaeology Merit Badge programs for Boy Scouts to Native American Heritage, Archaeology, Colonial Survival and Museum Exploration Workshops for Girl Scouts. Each of the scout programs offer fun and exciting hands-on experiences utilizing science, archaeology and history.
Scout troop programs are offered at JPPM on weekends April through November with prior registration required (some holidays and special event weekends may not be available). To schedule a workshop or program or for more information, contact Kelly Cooper at
(410) 586-8504 or kcooper(at)mdp.state.md.us! Full program descriptions can also be found online at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum -Maryland State Museum of Archaeology. Minimum 8 scouts, all ages, $8.00 per workshop.
Scouts can also work towards their requirements for archaeology badges at JPPM’s opening day event Discovering Archeology Day on April 14 from 10 AM – 4 PM. Interested Girl and Boy Scouts of all ages are invited to a day of archaeology fun. Meet and talk with archaeologists from across the State of Maryland and learn about the different kinds of sites under research! Try your hand at a number of hands-on experimental archaeological activities such as flint knapping, and seed and bone analysis. Visit the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory and the Smith’s St. Leonard archaeological site where you will get a chance to help screen for artifacts and look at artifacts recovered at JPPM.
This event is free, but scouts attending this event are asked to sign in at the JPPM Education Table for requirement worksheets to work towards badges and patches and meet your local archaeology merit badge counselor.
