I quit doing that when one day I had a den with three access holes. Poured about a pint of gas into each. Stuffed blankets into each. Let the fumes build up then removed a blanket and threw in a match. BOOM! Damn thing went off and blew burning leaves and debris out of each hole for about 50' . I spent about two hours runnings around stomping out little fires in the woods.

That's about the time the fishhook idea was recommended to me.

I've used Gopher Gassers. It's a larger version of the smoking mole sticks. Don't know if anyone carries them anymore, last place I saw them was the Greenery.

Question: Will St. Mary's county animal control come get a groundhog if I trap it myself? I've just discovered that I have at least 3 in my yard. I know as a kid we used to trap them, put the cage in the back of the station wagon and release them out in the sticks, far away from the house. I'd prefer, however, not the put the smelly bastards in my car if somebody else will pick it up for me.

Of course a .22 would be preferable to all that effort, but I'm in too heavily populated an area to be safe. And the people in the townhouses behind me would probably start shooting back.

I trapped a skunk that kept getting into my peacock pen to eat the cat food that I feed him. Animal Control came the next morning and shot it for me. He left quickly afterwards as I walked down the driveway to my farm house thinking it doesn't smell too much just as the wind changed. I covered my nose and mouth and ran the rest of the way. It had already gotten to my throat and eyes. I waited till the next day to bury it. Haven't had one around since, but I do have some of those pesky ground hogs. Gonna borrow the trap again and get him and his children too. I'll get my son to shot them instead of bothering Animal Control this time.
