Impulse gardener

I wish I had more discipline so that I can plan a garden and stick with it. But no. I go to Lowe's or Indian Bridge and say, "Ooh! What's that?" and buy it. Then I bring it home and have to figure out where to put it.

Asters!

Mums!

Salvia!

Pansies!

I want that!

I impulse bought two packs of red tulips (30 bulbs) and two packs of muscari and hyacinth (86 bulbs) the other day. So of course I potted and planted them today, knowing full well it's too early.

The asters I planted last year have clouds of purple flowers on them and they look great! But the red petunias are having failure to thrive, so I want to rip them out and put in more bulbs.

...will be fine. They'll need to be vernalized (cold treatment) over the winter before you'll get color, but you're not hurting them by planting now. You're really just ahead of the game some.

I did the same thing this past Spring. My pool area looks like a fortress. I did my ordering online and noticed that I was billed for another shipment of 100 something bulbs coming in a few weeks (when I ordered them - it wasn't the season so they split the shipment). Those will bloom in March, April, May and early June. When I plant that stuff, I am going to scalp everything down to the ground.

I ordered some really off the wall things earlier this year (which is why I went for the bulbs) because they are the sorts of flowers you don't see very often in the stores. I love flowers and find pleasure in seeing them bloom. It is like a constant gift of surprise from March until October.
