HVAC Question

We have a low voltage short somewhere in our heating system.

We are blowing fuses in the Heat Pump System....

Where should we look first?

...what happened when the problem started? Did someone hang a picture, poke a hole somewhere where the thermostat wire may be and got nicked?

Could it be mice chewing on something?

Things don't 'just' break. There is something wrong somewhere and it could be an old problem that finally manifested itself, a wire against an edge that finally wore through or, more likely, something new.

Start with that first; what happened when the problem started?

In the yellow pages under heating and air conditioning!

JK, the above post is correct. What was happening when the fault first occurred?

Thanks...

It's never blown a fuse before. No we haven't hung any pictures, we don't have mice [maybe squirrels outside but not in the house].

So where do I go now? We woke up in the morning [Thanksgiving Morning] and the heat would not cut on. We check the thermostat but don't see anything there that is touching anything else.

I don't have $100 to have someone come out if it's something I can fix myself. If it's a minor thing... like reconnect a wire or something... then I need to do it myself... if it's complicated, then I'll have to call.

We have a couple of gas fireplaces and baseboard heat too so we're not cold yet but we do need to fix the heat pump if we can.

What is causing you to say "low voltage" short? What fuses are blown?

Have you checked the fuses outside at the unit? The breaker in the panel?

OK... checked the breaker in the house... it's fine.

Hubby went out to the unit and there's a 5 AMP car fuse that was blown. We replaced it with another 5 AMP we had and it blew as soon as the heater was turned back on.

Hubby spoke with a friend who "knows about these things" at work and they used the word "low voltage" and "short".

So I figured I'd try online...

also I just noticed that B&E is advertising on this site ... cool cause they are our repair service ... that I can't afford to call this week

...the fuse blowing could be simple, could be major. You probably need to call a pro.
