I got mine from Lowes, it's a Honeywell. Make sure you read all of the packages to get the right one for your unit.

BTW, after I bought mine and installed it, I too found out SMECO will give you one for free. Might wanna check into that as well. BTW, they'll also check your hot water heater elements and replace them if needed for a very reasonable price.

Most good ones will have a filter reminder flag.

Make sure that you buy, for the max capabilities of your unit that you currently have installed, which will give you, your best performance = best savings in the long run.
Heat pumps have a filter? Maybe thats what those big filters in my closet are for! They've been sitting there since we bought the house a year ago because we didnt know what they were. I have no idea about the rest of those questions- how do I find out if it does those things?

Google your make and model.

The air filters are for your air handler.

If I'm not mistaken, many carbon monoxide deaths in the home are caused by the filters not being changed.

Not with a heat pump. Electric heat pumps don't produce CO1.

So i bought a programable t-stat from Lowes (Honeywell RTH7500) and it wont work. Apparantly we have a 3 stage heat pump...no clue what that means. I called SMECO and they said it wont work with our system either. When i was trying to hook up that t-stat, there were 2 wires that didnt have a place: W2 and W3. I couldnt figure out where they went, so i called the Honeywell help number, and they told me it wouldnt work. So now I've pretty much hit a wall. Does anyone know if there is a programmable thermostat that will work with my system? Or do I have to call an HVAC guy? (We dont have much money, and I dont know how much an HVAC guy would cost us ) Thanks in advance...

So are you saying that the one SMECO is installing for free won't work with your system? Call Honeywell and ask them what one works with our system. They will need to know what you currently have and what wires are hooked up.

Cathleen,

SMECO is giving away a free programable thermostat; they install it and give you $50 credit a year.
