Watering Grass

When is the best time to water your lawn?

I have the sprinkler system to start at 5am.
Now I am being told to water during sunlight hours.
I always thought that watering during sunlight could burn the grass.

I always thought it was evening time. That way the water had a better chance to soak in, rather that evaporating in the sunlight.

Morning. Golf courses water all through the day. Watering in the evening promotes fungal growth in your lawn.

Yeah, I've had to dodge the sprayers on the way to work past the Pax golf course in the am. They can't seem to figure out the difference between pavement and grass.

Water in the morning hours right after sunrise.
Of course, watering during the hottest part of the day isn't the best time to water, and you can lose up to about 65% of water through evaporation, but are you going to burn the lawn? No.

From the University of Minnisota Extension Service: "Midday watering, though good for the plants since it cools the plant temperatures and reduces heat stress, is not as efficient because some of the water evaporates before getting into the soil."

Watering at night contributes to disease and promotes fungus.

I have a sprinkler system and it starts at 6:15AM every three days. I have little trouble with my lawn. I do sometimes have to spot water a few small patches once in a while.

I water in the morning, but now I have a fungal disease (Brown Patch), from what they tell me.
They put down a fungicide (Thiophanate methyl), but didn't tell me if the grass would grow back.
The lawn was beautiful, they say the high humidity can cause the fungal disease.

I don't water mine. Saves gas and mower time. Unless its a new patch.

Good thing I don't have much of a lawn that I don't bother to water.

I haven't cut my yard in over 2 weeks and my grass is as green as can be.

I usually water in the a.m. when I think it needs it. But with the recent heat we've had, I watered all day today - moving the sprinkler to different spots after a little while.
