Starting a veggie garden..Too late??

Hello. I would like to start a small vegetable garden. I need to know what plants are too late to start from seeds and what plants I need to buy already planted and just plant in my garden. I would like to grow bell peppers (green, yellow, red), lettuce, tomatos, cucumbers, strawberries, corn, watermelon, and squash. I would appreciate any other tips you have as well! Thanks. I am looking to plant these sometime this weekend if it is not too late!! :0)

I would assume if you are starting from plants and not from seed, you should be ok.

But even so, on the seed packets they give germination days, and how many days before harvest.. do the math, and would think if you beat the end of September/ October you should be fine.

May be too late for leaf lettuce. Lettuce is an early crop, you can usually get two plantings in. Early spring and pick your crop, and then plant again in late summer for a fall crop. Leaf lettuce in the heat of summer turns bitter. Tomato and bell pepper plants should be fine. Watch out for borer beatles with squash, had no luck at all with squash in parts of Cal. co. big beautiful plants and then would just wilt up and die. Remember give strawberries a lot of their own room. The three step rule sleep the first year, creep the second year, leap the third year and you have strawberries coming out the ying yang. One garden we had we started with ten strawberrie plants and by the third year we were over 50 and cutting them back. Once established they will spread like a weed, but with tasty results. Good Luck

You still have a good 4-5 months before the frost but at this point, why wait for seeds to sprout? I would just go to Lowe's or a garden center and buy the plants. Just dig a hole, throw in a little rich soil, pop them in and water. You'll get your veggies that much quicker. I'm impatient that way!

I was looking at this site to help with my 11 yellow squash plants I started from seeds - I think I will end up with MORE squash that I can possibly eat (if they survive and thrive) and I may even turn YELLOW in the process of eating so much squash LOL

This is what I did with all of our extra squash last year. It's so good and you can freeze it!

Lettuce, radishes and carrots can go in late August early Sept. to ripen into the cool weather. Carrots are much sweeter then. Tomato, pepper and eggplant plants can be put in now for a late harvest. Cucumbers can be seed sown now as can pumpkins for Halloween. I've had lettuce and radishes as late as Christmas dinner when I had a cold frame.

Bread will last a few months. But you can freeze the squash directly for use later. Just cut it up and throw it in a ziploc or your foodsaver.

When I'm in NY I stock up on bagels and Italian breads, double-bag them and freeze them. Good for months.
