Tulip bulbs

I was given 3 big bags of premium Tulip bulbs. The soil where I live is full of rocks, and is basically clay. Should I put in a raised bed? I'd like to plant them this weekend since it's suppose to be warm. I'm kind of at a loss

Around here, moles are the worst threat to a tulip bulb, they LOVE tulip bulbs and will eat every one of them.

Buy large, deep clay pots and bury them so that an inch or so of the rim is above the ground. Fill with potting soil and plant your bulbs. The clay pot help to keep the moisture even, but you may have to water them more than things directly in the ground, so keep an eye on them.

Or you can just plant them in pots and place the pots wherever you'd like them. They will certainly need watering this way.

Enjoy!

PS Moles don't like daffodil bulbs, and deer don't like the foliage - plant lots of daffodils....

Squirrels love to dig them up and eat them all winter long when you are not looking... do you have squirrels?

Moles keep eating my damn hostas, they eat the center and leave the outer parts so I get a hosta ring in the spring time.

I'm glad you started this thread Fubar, my Nana gave me a bunch of tulip bulbs too.

When are you supposed to plant them?

What if you are going to put them in planters?

I remember my Dad used to keep them in the refrigerator until early Spring. Should I do that?

Technically, spring bulbs should have been planted in the fall, but the stores sell them in the spring. Go figure. If you get them in by early-March, they should be ok.

I gave up on most spring bulb stuff. Either the deer or the moles eat it. The only thing I have left is a big garden of daffys.

Keeping them in the fridge simulates the cool-off temps they need to sprout on-time in the spring. If you plant soon, don't bother.

I have 3 LARGE bags of bulbs, it would cost a fortune to buy pots-what to do.
