Soil Testing

Where can you go to get your dirt samples tested? I'll be redoing a yard this spring and want to test the soil to see if its lacking anything.

You can get a test kit in some of the local stores (thinking I saw one in the Greenery). It will give you the basics, like pH, potash content, etc...
Might even find one at Lowes or WallyMart.

From Ace Hardware:
Rapitest® Soil Tester (1601) - Soil Test Kits - Ace Hardware

First get a test puller ( piece of pipe with one end sharpened and a lengthwise slot - most farmers got one). Take a composite sample . Pull a plug of dirt and put on a bucket from all over the area like a checker board. Mix bucket well put composite in ziplock take to local southern states for tasting. Cost about 10 bucks. They will recommend and custom mix what you need to grow what you want even send a spreader truck to apply it

Fact Sheet from the University of Maryland. This tells you how to manage your lawn and take soil samples. There is a phone # in this fact sheet for test kits.

Cool piece of info. We have often thought about getting ours tested as well. Of course, we have a TON of shade so we have to figure that part out as well.
