Nitrogen-Removing Septic Systems

I am planning to finally build a new home in Lusby, md. Builder told me as of Jan 1st, Calvert County is requiring all new homes to have the Nitrogen-Removing Septic Systems regardless if it is greater than 1,000 feet of the Chesapeake Bay or its tributaries. I cannot find anything on the web to back that up. I plan on calling Calvert County office to find out if that is true. These tanks are an eye sore the way it sits partially above ground. I have a few friends with them. The live near the bay so I understand why they have them. Anyone hear of anything different?

other than more expensive they really arent bad. The box/risers can be landscaped around and really dont end up being much of an eyesore.

This is a requirement that came down from the state. I believe MDE is the agency behind it.

Your poop apparently makes the algae bloom, not the nitrous pumped into the corn fields on the eastern shore....

Fact, it is an MDE thing. the local counties have no control over it.

10-15000.00 extra over 30 years may not sound bad....But what if yours fails and you have to cough up the cash ?

We got one in 2009. They landscaped it nicely.

Just remember, with these new ones, the control panel needs a dedicated 30A power source, and a telephone line.

Also, MDE offers a grant to get one installed. It's called the "Bay Restoration Fund – Onsite Sewage Disposal System (OSDS) Financial Assistance"

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...42768644,d.cGE

With that said, funding is limited, and priority is given to those in the critical area. Breakdown is as follows:
Quote:
The State has established priorities for funding: #1-Properties with failed septic
systems in the Critical Area; #2-Failed septic systems outside of the Critical Area; #3-
Properties within the Critical Area without a failed septic system and; #4-Properties
outside the Critical Area that have not failed.
I received this grant last year, but I was a #1 priority.
