Amish Feed

Has or does anyone use the Amish made feed? My new barn uses the Amish made feed and my mare is getting very moody. I am wondering if its the change in the feed. She was fine on Strider 10/10 pellet and since we moved to a new barn and they feed an Amish made feed that is mostly sweet feed her personality has changed. She has become quite Mare -ish - LOL as she wasnt before. I am just thinking it could be the feed as nothing else is diferent for her and she has a pasture mate.

Yes I think it could very well be the feed causing her behavior changes. I never had much luck with the amish made feed. My horses did much better on the name brand feeds (favorite was blue seal... but used others too). Plus I got a few moldy bags from the amish feed mill and that scared me enough to stop using the amish feed completely.

As with most products, read the label to see what is or isn't in the bag. I've gotten molded feed from the southern states store too, simply returned and exchanged, no problem.

I agree - I think I am going with another brand of feed. They were on Strider Blue Seal at one time and I may just put them back on that.

Blue Seal is a great feed, have used it for years with no problems. I also use Strategy, same deal. I personally prefer pelleted feed, mine don't need sweet feed and do better without it.

We use ADM feeds. In all the years I've owned horses, I've found it's the best! A little more pricey than most, but you feed half of what you would normally feed, so basically, the same price. Very safe, balanced and they believe in forage first. Everyone I know who has switched, said they will NEVER switch back to their old feed. I was a huge fan of Blue Seal. But this stuff is amazing for all horses! They even have a free analysis you can do for your horse and actually people will e-mail you back. Although, the only place that sells it locally right now is Wheatley's Tack Shop. Good luck! Here's a link: http://www.grostrong.com/

I think Im going back to Blue Seal Sport. I have them on Purina Strategy now and they are gaining weight which is what I needed badly. But its 14% fat and with TB's it will make them hot. I dont need a hot TB when he gets healthy although I can handle it but my hubby cant handle his mare being hot. So I need to take them down to a 12% fat.

I have a TB on Strategy, it's actually min 14% protein & min 6% fat. I have no issues with it creating too much energy. That's just my experience.

I mix 1 bag of Nutrena Hay Stretcher into 2 bags of Nutrena 12/12 textured - I use the textured however it's also an extruded pelleted type of feed. It's darker in color than the regular pelleted Nutrena 12/12, so I can verify the balance between the grain vs the hay pellet. My guys are doing great on this mixture. I get Nutrena at Stolzfus' on Thompsons Corner Road.
