If it's a piece of crap that doesn't play right, you're just asking for the kid to give it up without a fair trial.

We'll rent one from a reputable place.

If your son is in elementary school, there's nothing wrong with buying a "cheaper" trumpet. One the child decides he wants to stick with it, then you might think about upgrading. Sure, a $200 trumpet wouldn't be good for the BSO, but it's perfectly fine for a school child. Maybe if he is in high school and has been playing seriously for several years a higher dollar trumpet would work better, but I really don't think you need a top-of-the-line model for younger children.

You sure you don't want to pay the $200 up front?
We did the same thing for our sons trumpet. It was no $200 trumpet though. Still would have been better to just buy it. Finally made the last payment when we went to Hot Licks the other night for a Violin for the youngest.

NOBODY in elementary school sounds good, and tearing up an $800 trumpet would make me want to cry... The first time they dented it I would be pissed for weeks.

A GOOD saxophone when I was in high School was $1200, I (nor my parents) ever paid more than $400.

Hot licks has an awesome deal going on right now. First 3 months is 19.95 that is for three months not per month. Then after that it is like $25 per month.. Can't go wrong. It is a rent to own program as well.

I got Emily's viola from the classifieds here. A lady had it for $25!!! It is in great shape and plays beautifully. She had rented it for a year for her daughter and then bought it. It cost her about $400 total. It was a great deal for me!

if ya need some help

First off a trumpet mouth piece is totally different then a wood wind you can boil a brass piece which I would recommend to do weekly anyways due to germs. If you would like some help with care and teaching a few things let me know I played for 8 years. I still have mine it is beat up but still plays like a champ. It is a king and it would be good for a beginner. I will be back up there this coming weekend. Let me know and I will bring it up with me.
